Aotearoa street artist Xoë Hall (Kāi Tahu) recently teamed up with Pōneke based arts advocate, IP lawyer and patent attorney Tom Huthwaite to create BAD EXPOSURE NZ. Their two worlds collided after a series of unfortunate (but not uncommon) instances of artists being ripped off for commercial gain. They found that countless artists have experienced something similar, and many thought there wasn’t much that could be done about it. After all, street art is "public art", right...?
Well friends, as it turns out, you can do plenty!
Now is the time to spread the word and help our artists and creatives to protect their mahi. Let’s also break down the barriers and common misconceptions of the legal profession. We hope to educate not only artists but everyone that it is not OK to steal art and use it for commercial or personal gain. Then, maybe we can all get ahead in this crazy old world.
